Engineering Distinguished Lecture by Professor Brian Mace: "Waves and Finite Elements"
In this talk a Wave Finite Element (WFE) method for the analysis of the wave behaviour of uniform 1- and 2-dimensional structures is described. The WFE method involves conventional Finite Element (FE) analysis of just a small segment of the structure, using conventional FE methods and commercial codes, followed by application of periodic structure theory. This results in an eigenproblem, the solutions to which yield wavenumbers etc. The forced response can be determined from these eigensolutions. Prof Brian Mace is currently Professor of Structural Dynamics at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton, UK and Chairman of the Dynamics Group at ISVR.
